Biodynamic agriculture, not to be confused with biology, is a practice that cannot yet be considered a science but that is not for this reason to overshadow. In Italy it is starting to take hold, too on the wave of Expo 2015 which has shifted the attention of many towards disciplines and customs that, without this appointment, would have remained "niche".
Biodynamic agriculture: what it is
The definition of biodynamic agriculture it makes it seem more complex than it is when it comes to applying it. It is a cultivation method based on anthroposophical spiritual vision of the world. It was in fact the philosopher Rudolf Steiner to conceive it with the idea of starting to produce food while staying in balance with the terrestrial ecosystem.
It is not a discipline foreign tobiological agriculture, indeed, it draws inspiration from it but deviates towards an interpretation it has of holistic because it asks us to start changing mentality and consider the soil and the life that develops on it as a single system.
Biodynamic agriculture: principles
According to Steiner, the two principles on which biodynamic agriculture is based are composting and the phases of the Moon, everything revolves around these two pillars aiming at a green revolution, naturally from below. The objectives? Keep the land fertile but also the plants healthy, and at the same time increase the quality of the products that we then go to eat. A real challenge, that of biodynamic agriculture.
Compared to the traditional one, this green practice excludes the use of fertilizers that are not completely natural with certainty. You should not even remotely hear about chemical or toxic substances.
Biodynamic agriculture: calendar
We have mentioned the principles ofBiodynamic agriculture finding the phases of the Moon and actually to apply this method at best it is necessary first of all to pay attention to the position of the stars. The Moon, of course, rules and dictates when it comes to decide the days for sowing, transplanting or pruning. It is not enough to look at any calendar with the symbols of the waxing or waning moon, there is the astronomical calendar specially made for those who want to get serious.
Along with this month-to-month programming, you have to also look after the compost used, that is, the combination of earth, plant remains, water, calcium which for plants means energy and life. There are ad hoc preparations for composting, they work like the homeopathic drops that many of us may have with us. There are generally two types of preparations, they can be accumulation or spray.
Biodynamic agriculture: in Italy
In Italy there are associations committed to promoting biodynamic agriculture, organize meetings, courses and initiatives, as well as inform and update all those who show interest. One of the first actions to do is on fertilization, making sure that the soil is and remains "alive". We therefore suggest the use of agricultural fertilizer, coming from the stables compared to other products that do not derive from a vital process and often nourish only the roots.
Biodynamic agriculture: courses
There are several courses of Biodynamic agriculture but it is very important to check who keeps them because there are some practices with a structured scientific root, which are useful and virtuous, but also others that have no scientific basis.
Among those that we can say useful are l'Burying of particular plants for fertilizer purposes and crop rotation, for example. As already mentioned, even the "biodynamic preparations" are essential and in the courses you learn that they must be made from manure, quartz powder or vegetable substances.
Today the Biodynamic agriculture it is considered a pseudoscience due to the fact that it often cites "Cosmic forces" and concepts such as that of "vital energy", but this should not be put aside. Let us draw useful lessons from it.
Biodynamic agriculture: books
Those who want to start with a soft and at the same time concrete approach, can get this Practical manual of biodynamic agriculture. It is an easy guide, even very clear, for those who want to take the first steps or even deepen the method.
