Ginger jam: how to prepare it at home, the necessary ingredients, the procedure and how to store it.

Ginger is a very popular root for its nutritional and beneficial properties. Since ancient times, ginger has been used in medicine and even today experts extol the effects and benefits it brings to the body: we have already praised its health benefits in the article: "Ginger properties"

Thanks to its high content of antioxidants, ginger is widely used both in natural medicine and in gastronomy. In fact, there are creams, ointments, ginger-based ointments but also liqueurs, beers and thirst-quenching drinks.

Its use is also found in the production of jams and candied fruit, in biscuits, focaccia and crackers, in syrups, in tea. In this regard, we will show you how to make ginger jam, following our recipe step by step.

Ginger jam, why have it in the pantry

Preparing ginger jam at home is a good opportunity to benefit from the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action of this spice; winter is almost upon us, this means being more exposed to colds, sore throats, phlegm….

Ginger jam allows us to start the day with a healthy diet. The spicy flavor makes the ginger jam a unique delicacy, especially for those who love the characteristic taste typical of this spicy spice.

How to make ginger jam at home, what we need

Preparing ginger jam at home is very simple and healthy; after all, everything that is done with our hands is better! The ginger jam recipe does not require special knowledge; anyone can make it, just have the right ingredients.

Ingredients for 1 jar of Ginger Jam

  • 250 grams of fresh ginger roots
  • 1 organic apple
  • 120 grams of brown sugar
  • 170 ml of water
  • 4-5 cloves (if you prefer)
  • Sterilized glass jar with hermetic closure

How to make homemade ginger jam, the preparation

  1. Remove the ginger peel with the help of a small knife
  2. Once this is done, also peel the apple and cut it into chunks: the apple serves both to thicken the jam (as the pectin contained acts as a gelling agent) and to sweeten and attenuate the spicy flavor of the spice.
  3. At this point, cut the ginger into small pieces then pour it into a blender or food processor to chop it well. Alternatively, it is possible to use the grater. The only drawback is that the preparation will take a little longer.
  4. After blending the spice well, take a fairly large pot and pour the apple then add the chopped ginger
  5. Also add the sugar and water and mix everything with a wooden spoon
  6. Cook over low heat and stir with a spoon until boiling; always keep turning so that the ginger jam does not stick to the pot.
  7. At this point we can also add some cloves to further flavor our jam or a pinch of nutmeg.
  8. As soon as the mixture begins to thicken (after about 30-40 minutes), you can turn everything off and transfer the ginger jam into a glass jar and let it cool.

Useful hints: if the taste is too strong, you can add another half apple and reduce the spice to a pulp in order to avoid having whole pieces.

How to Store Ginger Jam

Freshly prepared ginger jam with our hands can be kept in the refrigerator for about 10 days. If, on the other hand, you want to prepare more jars and always have a supply available, you will have to proceed differently:

  1. As soon as you turn off the heat and the ginger jam is still hot, immediately pour them into sterilized jars.
  2. Close the cap tightly and immerse the jars in a large pot covered with water
  3. Then boil for 15-20 minutes so that the "vacuum" is created.

In this way it will be possible to keep the ginger jam for several months and consume it when we need it or when we want to give our guests an original and delicious jam.

How to use ginger jam

Ginger jam can be spread on rusks or bread. It can be enjoyed as a snack, perhaps with a vegan cheese always made with our hands. It is also excellent for filling cakes and pies or "spoon".

We can experiment with even more original ways to enjoy jam; we can combine it with other ingredients that recall salty; for example, spread it on a cracker or accompany it with croutons and snacks. If we especially love the taste of ginger, we can also make ginger syrup or even a digestive liqueur.

Useful recommendations for those who consume ginger

It should be noted that this spice cannot be taken indiscriminately by everyone. In fact, it also has contraindications and for this reason some people should limit its consumption.

It is preferable to consult your doctor before adding this spice to your diet
